CARTER’S ENCYCLOPAEDIA OF HEALTH AND MEDICINE

This book has been published as an extremely comprehensive iPad, iPhone       and iPod Touch application, specifically written for the general public. Over 13,000 topics are covered by more than 1.1 million words.

The app covers the definitions and explanations of every medical term and health problem likely to be encountered by an individual, and should be detailed enough to cover all the information a nurse or paramedical is ever likely to need. It is written in a relaxed style that expands on the basic dictionary definitions to make the knowledge it contains encyclopaedic in its coverage. The contents should be understood by anyone with a high school education, and certainly no prior knowledge of medicine or science is necessary.

Extensive cross referencing enables readers to follow up other related areas of interest and demonstrate how everything within the body is connected in someway to something else, making us an extraordinarily complex and interconnected organism.

1001 MEDICAL QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Patients want to know what is happening to them, where the diseased organs or tissue are, when they are going to get better or worse, and why it is happening to them. This book attempts to answer many of these questions. None of the questions are invented, all are genuine. In fact, no doctor could really imagine some of the improbable questions that have been asked. At some times it is difficult to keep a straight face or believe that what is being asked is a genuine query, but amazing things worry different people, and both the questions and their answers can be fascinating. First published in March 2002, circulation now exceeds 80,000.

HOME DOCTOR

Modern society is moving at an ever increasing pace, and many people find that they just don’t have time to look after themselves properly. This includes preventing mishaps and disease, as well as coping with injuries and illness whenever, and wherever, it happens. Covering 101 topics, this 160,000 word book is designed to be a simple guide to the 101 most important ways in which a person can look after their health and abnormal symptoms, and the health of those they care for. Published in 2005, its circulation already exceeds 100,000.

MAKING BABIES

Making babies makes the world go round. Without babies, human existence fails to progress and dies out. Making a baby is the most important thing that a couple can do, but some find it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to achieve. This book is written so that  each chapter can be read relatively independently, or a couple may decide to work through it from cover to cover so that they understand everything involved in the complex and wondrous process of making a baby, what may prevent this from happening and how the problems can be solved. Interesting curiosities complete each section, just to add a little lightness to a serious discussion. Published in March 2006.

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MEDICAL SYMPTOMS

This 150,000 word book covers over 300 symptoms that can be experienced by the human body, and explains in detail the possible causes, from the common to the rare, so that they can be understood by a lay person. Extensively cross referenced, this book was published by Hale & Iremonger in May 1999. Circulation 10,000.

This book was published by Simon & Schuster in August 1992, and has also been published in New Zealand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.
